FAQ

What is Eat the Rainbow Challenge?
It's a game that you can play with your family, friends or co-workers to eat more fruits and veggies. Eat the Rainbow Challenge is very successful in elementary schools as a healthy lifestyles program.

Is Eat the Rainbow Challenge a diet or a meal plan?
No, it's simply a game. It brings attention to  fruits and vegetables using colors so it's a great way to kick-start good eating habits without the pressure.

How does it work?
Each day has a color.  You earn points by eating the color of the day! It's all a game so we try not to mention the 'health' benefits of the fruits and veggies. The game just focuses on the colors and earning points. For schools, we offer a complete package that includes a banner, tickets and instructions. Kids love the points, tickets and focus on color. Eat the Rainbow Challenge has been very successful in getting elementary school kids excited about eating fruits and veggies. Take a look at some of the testimonials!

Who can play?
Eat the Rainbow Challenge is a fun game to play in the school cafeteria.
You can also print it and play as a family or get together with another parent and let the kids play with their friends.

My school is having Eat the Rainbow Challenge. Do I pick out the fruits and veggies or do my kids?
It's up to you but it's best if everyone is involved in making choices. You could try shopping for the week together and having them choose the fruits and veggies. Or get their input before you go shopping. Try to get fruits and veggies that they like, are familiar with and a few that are new. Try to limit the new ones to one or two per week if your family is not quite open to new things. Don't worry or feel pressured. This game is for fun so take it easy and start small if you need to. For example if your child does not eat fruits and veggies at all, even one fruit or veggie a day will be an improvement. On the other hand, if your family is in a rut, use the game to try new produce.

Can we eat other fruits and veggies or do they have to correspond?
Any fruit or veggie counts for a point, however eating the corresponding colors earns you more points.

Does this game really get kids eating fruits and veggies?
Yes, Eat the Rainbow Challenge has been very successful at getting kids to eat fruits and veggies.

How long do we have to do this?
Eat the Rainbow Challenge is played for five days at schools.  You can play it as long as you wish at home. You could do the challenge for a week or longer if your family takes to it. You could do one week every month as a reminder or every few weeks when you feel you need a little push to stay on track. Research has proven that doing anything for three or more weeks can create habits so you could aim for three or more weeks. Every family's needs are unique. Do what works for you. Have fun and don't be pressured.

Why Eat the Rainbow Challenge?
It's a no-brainer and well known fact by now that diets high in fruits and veggies can significantly increase our kids' health quotient, protect them from diseases and significantly increase their life spans. Living in an age when our kids are predicted to have shorter lifespans than our generation, the challenge is then how to change habits and increase their intake of fruits and veggies.
It's an uphill battle and there is no one answer to changing the habits of kids that are used to making their own (often not the wisest) choices.
We have to slowly but surely create healthier habits and change eating patterns in our families. Long term healthy eating habits are dictated by many factors but Eat the Rainbow Challenge can help you to make it fun!
